Programming your BizTalk radios allows you to customize channels, privacy codes, and optimize performance across your team. Whether you're a beginner or just need a refresher, this guide offers quick, practical tips for using Midland's programming software effectively.
How do I program the radio?
Follow the programming instructions for your radio from the downloadable programming software found here.
🧩 What Can I Program on My BizTalk Radio?
Using Midland’s free PC programming software, you can adjust:
-
Channel frequencies (within UHF business band: 450–470 MHz)
-
CTCSS/DCS privacy codes
-
Bandwidth (narrowband/wideband)
-
Transmit (TX) and receive (RX) frequencies
-
Power level (high/low)
-
Optional features like VOX, Scan, and more
💡 Top Programming Tips for BizTalk Radios
1. Match Channels + Privacy Codes Across Radios
-
For clear communication, make sure Channel 1 on Radio A matches Channel 1 on Radio B in both:
-
Frequency (e.g., 464.5000 MHz)
-
Privacy Code (e.g., DCS 023N)
-
If these don’t match, radios will not transmit or receive properly.
2. Use Narrowband for Better Compatibility
-
Most business radios today use 12.5 kHz narrowband spacing
-
Always set both transmit and receive bandwidths to narrowband unless you know your partner radios use wideband
3. Set Both TX and RX Frequencies
-
Some channels may require split TX/RX frequencies (known as repeater use)
-
For direct (simplex) communication, TX and RX should be identical
4. Save a Copy of Your Config File
-
After programming, always save your channel profile as a .dat file
-
This makes it easy to replicate settings on new radios or restore defaults if needed
🛠️ Troubleshooting Programming Issues
Use the default value if unsure.
TIP: Reset the radio to its default values and change only the settings necessary. Leave all others as the default value.
I programmed the radio, but it still doesn't work with my other radios.
- Use the "Read" function within the software to make sure the data you sent to the radio is correct
- Check the settings on both radios, making sure they are the same, especially the TX/RX frequency and Privacy Codes by channel. These must match for the radios to work together.
I don't see my frequency listed in your channel bank.
- Do you have an FCC Licensed frequency outside of the Industrial/Business pool?
- It it a UHF frequency?
- If so, send your programming information to us at support@midlandusa.com and we can send you back a data file to program your radio.
The programming software will not install or run on my computer.
Ensure your computer meets the minimum Windows requirements. Note that the software will not work on Apple (Mac) computers. You will need to use a Windows PC. If you are still having issues, uninstall and reinstall the program. If issues persist, you may want to contact your IT administrator to ensure internal firewalls are not blocking it.
The programming data will not transfer to the radio from the computer. I keep getting an error code when I click "start".
- Make sure the programming cable is correctly installed between the radio and computer. Unplug and reinstall the cable or replace it if necessary.
- Make sure the radio has a charged battery and is turned on. (Do not program a radio while in the charger)
- Check your COM port. Your computer will automatically assign a COM port to transfer the data from the PC to the radio, but you may need to try a different COM port.
- Install a USB to Serial Port conversion driver. The programming cable includes this driver and should automatically install on your computer the first time you use it. You can install or update a standard driver, if necessary from this link.
