FCC Licensing
GMRS channels require an FCC license in the United States. Apply via www.fcc.gov or call 1-888-CALL-FCC.
Channels 1–7 and 15–22 are GMRS; 8–14 are FRS and do not require a license.
LCD Display:
- NOAA Weather (WX) ICON – Indicates when the radio is in weather band mode and alert readiness status.
- CHANNEL NUMBER – Indicates GMRS or repeater channel number (1-99). In weather modes, indicates NOAA WX channel number (1-10)
- REPEATER ICON – Indicates when the current channel is a repeater channel.
- BATTERY METER – Indicates battery level and battery-low status.
- SCAN ICON – Indicates when GMRS, Dual Watch Pro, or weather channel scanning modes are active.
- DUAL WATCH ICON – Indicates primary or active channel during Dual Watch Pro scanning.
- PRIVACY ICON AND CODE – Indicates privacy code type and number when CTCSS (1-38) or DCS (1-104) is used on the channel. Also shows CODE and the number (0-142) to indicate group code.
- VOX ICON – Indicates when VOX mode is active.
- NOISE CANCELLATION ICON – Indicates when active noise cancellation will be active during transmissions.
- WHISPER ICON – Indicates when whisper microphone amplification will be active.
- BAND ICON – Indicates whether the radio is operating with wide band (W) or narrow band (N) modulation
- TRANSMIT (TX) POWER LEVEL ICON – Indicates TX Power setting high, medium, or low (Hi / Med / Low)
- USERNAME – Indicates user-defined name for the current channel (configurable only through the PC interface).
- KEY LOCK ICON – Indicates functions of some buttons are disabled.
- VIBRATE ALERT ICON – Indicates when the vibrate call alerting is active.
- GROUP ICON – Indicates group mode is active.
- GROUP ID AND NUMBER – Indicates the radio’s group ID number (1-10) when operating in group mode.
Controls:
- POWER / VOLUME KNOB – Turn clockwise to turn the power on and increase the volume level. Turn counterclockwise to decrease the volume level and turn the power off

- SPEAKER – Built-in speaker
- PTT BUTTON – Press and hold to transmit voice communications. Within menus, acts as a “back” button to accept settings (if changed) and return to the prior menu level.
- EXTERNAL SPEAKER / MIC – Accessory jack protected with a waterproof and dustproof cover.
- MIC – Built-in microphone
- DOT – MATRIX LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY (LCD)
- DOWN / SOS SIREN BUTTON – Use to scroll through menu options. Press and hold for 3 seconds to activate the SOS siren.
- MENU / WX BUTTON – Press to access and advance “forward” in menus. Press and hold for 3 seconds to enter NOAA Weather Radio modes and selections.
- UP BUTTON – Use to scroll through Menu options.
- CALL / LOCK BUTTON – Press to send a CALL Alert signal. Press and hold to turn KEY LOCK on / off.
- SCAN / MONITOR BUTTON – Press to enter or exit SCAN mode. Press and hold to enter or exit MONITOR mode.
- TX / RX LED – Indicates the radio is actively receiving (green) or actively transmitting (red).
- LANYARD / TETHER LOOP – Loop for attaching a lanyard or tether.
Power & Batteries
Uses rechargeable NiMH battery pack - please note that this battery is not user-replaceable. Please reach out to Midland Support for battery issues
Charging: Use Midland-approved desktop charger or adapter
Initial charge: 24 hours; subsequent: ~12 hours
Do not attempt to charge alkaline batteries
Battery Tips:
Remove from charger once full
Store NiMH fully charged; Li-ion at 50% charge if applicable
Avoid prolonged high heat exposure
Basic Operation
Turning On/Off & Volume:
Rotate Power/Volume knob clockwise to turn on & increase volume; counterclockwise to lower volume or turn off.
Transmitting:
Hold PTT, speak 2–3 inches from mic, release to listen.
Receiving:
Release PTT; RX icon shows when receiving.
Menu Settings
Channel Select: MENU once → choose channel (1–50)
Privacy Code: MENU twice → choose CTCSS (oF–38) or DCS (oF–83)
VOX: MENU until VOX → select 1–9 or oF
Call Alert: MENU until “CA” → choose tone 1–5
Roger Beep: MENU until “rb” → on/oF
Silent Operation: MENU until “bP” → on/oF
Vibrate Alert: MENU until vibrate icon → on/oF
Power Level: MENU until “Pr” → Hi/Med/Lo
NOAA Weather Radio
To Scan: Hold UP/WX for 5 seconds to scan all 10 channels. Stops on active NOAA channel.
To Set Channel Manually: Press MENU in WX mode → select 1–10.
Weather Alerts: MENU twice in WX mode → AL on/oF to toggle.
Scan & Monitor
Scan: Press SCAN to search all channels; stops on activity for 5 seconds.
Monitor: Hold MONITOR to open squelch for weak signals.
Keypad Lock
Hold CALL/LOCK for 4 seconds to lock settings; PTT & CALL still work.
Vibrate Alert
Radio vibrates when receiving a transmission or call tone (when enabled).
