GET STARTED: ASSEMBLE AND WEAR
ClipTalk is designed to be worn on your person, not carried in your hand like traditional handheld walkie talkies.
Important: The ClipTalk radio does not have an internal speaker. You must attach the earpiece to hear incoming audio. The earpiece does not have to be attached to charge the radio.
1. Connect the Earpiece for Audio
• Locate the Earpiece Port at the end of the antenna cable on the main fob unit. (Not the port on the fob itself – that is for the charging cable).
• Plug the earpiece into this port.
2. Clip It On
• The Radio Fob (main unit): Use the integrated clip to attach the radio body to your collar, lapel, backpack strap, or pocket.
• The Earpiece: Place the earpiece over your ear.
RADIO POWER
The ClipTalk radio is powered by an internal lithium polymer battery. This battery is non-removable and is not user serviceable. The ClipTalk battery will provide 8 hours of battery life with nominal usage when fully charged.
CHARGING YOUR CLIPTALK BATTERY
The ClipTalk radio can be charged from any USB-C type power supply. To charge your radio, connect one end of the supplied USB-C cable into any USB-C power source. Connect the opposite end of the cable to the type-C charging port directly on the ClipTalk fob. The ClipTalk will show the battery level icon with 1 section flashing to indicate that it is charging. When the unit is fully charged, the display will go blank and the unit will turn off.
Charging the ClipTalk from empty to full will take approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes.
For charging multiple ClipTalk radios at once, the desktop multi-unit charger is ideal. Plug in the desktop charger using the USB-C cable and wall mounting charging block, then inset ClipTalk radio into one of the 6 slots.
BATTERY INDICATOR
The current charge level of the ClipTalk radio battery is indicated by the battery level icon on the display. The greater the number of bars visible, the greater the charge level of the internal battery.
When the battery level is low, the ClipTalk will beep twice about every 45 seconds to let the user know it is time to recharge the unit.
BASIC OPERATION
1. Power On/Off
• To turn on the ClipTalk, press and hold “Select” for 3 seconds.
- Display will turn on and show the battery icon and channel number.
- If there is no activity for 5 seconds, the display will turn off.
- When there is no activity, the bottom segment of the battery icon will flash every 5 seconds to indicate that the unit is active.
• To turn the ClipTalk off, press and hold "Select" for 3 seconds. When the Select key is pressed, the display will show battery status and channel and then go blank when power is off.
TIP – To check whether a ClipTalk unit is powered on, press and release the PTT key. If power is on, the display will show battery status and channel number. If the display remains blank, the unit is powered off.
2. Transmitting (Talking)
You can communicate in two ways: Push-to-Talk (Manual) or VOX (Hands-Free).
• Method A: Push-to-Talk (PTT)
To transmit, press and hold the Push-to-Talk/PTT button while speaking close to the microphone. You will hear a “Roger Beep” (confirmation tone) when you release the PTT button to let others know you have finished talking.
3. Key Beep
The user will hear a beep in the earpiece each time + or - is pressed.
If the PTT is pressed for more than 1 minute continuously, the unit will stop transmitting, the display will go blank and the radio will not transmit again until the PTT is released and pressed again.
When transmitting, the active channel number and battery status will show on the display.
• Method B: VOX (Hands-Free)- See Mobile App Section
4. Display Channel and Volume
• If the display is blank, pressing and releasing SELECT will cause the display to turn on and show the current Channel and battery status.
5. Adjust Volume Up/Down
• To adjust the volume, press the + key to increase and the – key to decrease. Audible tones in the earpiece will indicate an increase or decrease in volume setting.
6. Channel Selection
• To select the desired channel, press and hold the + or – key for 3 seconds. The channel number will begin to increase or decrease.
When the desired channel (1 to 22) shows on the display, release the + or – key.
The radio will now display the selected channel.
7. Key Timeout
• After 5 seconds of no key activity, the display will go blank. The bottom segment of the battery icon will blink every 5 minutes to indicate that the unit is powered on.
8. Automatic Noise Cancellation (ANC) On/Off
• Holding down the PTT when turning the radio on will cause ANC to toggle between on and off. When the unit powers on, the display will show either “On” or “Off ” depending on the previous state.
9. Programming Mode – See next section on Midland Two-Way Radio Mobile App
MOBILE APP
MIDLAND TWO-WAY RADIO MOBILE APP
Programming Features Exclusive to the Midland Mobile App Your ClipTalk radio has several features that can be selected exclusively by using the Midland Two-Way Radio app on your iOS or Android phone.
To connect with the Midland Two-Way radio app, you must place your ClipTalk radio into Programming Mode.
To place your ClipTalk radio into Programming Mode:
• Assure that your ClipTalk radio is powered on.
• Press and hold both the + and – keys on your ClipTalk until you see a series of
3 dots moving counter counterclockwise on the display.
• At this time, your radio is discoverable with the Midland Two-Way Radio app. When the ClipTalk is connected to the Midland app, the ClipTalk will display a flashing cross symbol.
The following features are controlled by the Midland app:
1. Privacy Codes
Privacy codes allow your ClipTalk to ignore transmissions that do not use the selected privacy code.
NOTE: Privacy codes offer interference elimination, not true security. Any radio can listen if it is set to not have a privacy code.
2. Roger Beep
When the PTT button is released, the radio will transmit a beep to confirm to other users that your transmission has finished.
3. VOX Hands-Free (Voice Activation)
ClipTalk supports Voice-Activated Transmission (VOX), which automatically transmits when it detects your voice, allowing for truly hands-free operation.
VOX sensitivity can be set at 3 levels (1-3), with Level 1 being the most sensitive.
■ Once active, simply speak to transmit. The radio will stop transmitting automatically when you stop speaking. Note, there will be a slight delay so it is best to start with a word that does not need to be transmitted such as “Hey Midland”.
4. Automatic Noise Cancellation (ANC)
Turning on ANC will reduce some background noise when in a noisy environment.
5. Busy Channel Lockout
The busy channel lockout feature prevents the user from transmitting when there is other activity on the current channel. When pressing the PTT, the user will hear an alternating tone in the earpiece if the channel is busy due to another transmission.
