FAQs
Q: What is included with the purchase of the GXT3000?
A: 2 handheld radios, 2 rechargeable battery packs, desktop charger, AC wall adapter, 6-ft USB-C charging cable, vehicle power adapter, 2 boom mic headsets
Q: Is this a GMRS radio?
A: Yes, the GXT3000 operates on GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies which require an FCC license. You must be licensed prior to operating the radio. You can apply for a license at the FCC's website, or read more about that here.
Q: Will this radio communicate with my Midland GMRS MicroMobile radio or other GMRS handhelds?
A: Yes! The GXT3000 features 50 GMRS channels: 22 standard GMRS channels, 28 preset privacy code channels and 8 GMRS repeater channels.
Q: Is the GXT3000 wide or narrow band?
A: It is both! You can choose between using wide or narrow bandwidth on channels 1-7, 15-22, and repeater channels 15-22. All other channels are preset to narrow band. Narrowband may reduce effects of interference in some situations and is the best setting for operating with FRS-only radios. Wideband is the setting used by most repeaters. For best results, ensure both the transmitting & receiving radios both use the same bandwidth setting.
Q: Are these radios compatible with my Midland FRS handhelds?
A: Yes. Channels 15-22 will work with your Midland FRS handhelds. Narrowband is the best setting for operating with FRS-only radios.
Q: What is the reach of this radio?
A: Midland's GXT series radios are designed to give you maximum range under optimum conditions. Optimum conditions are:
- Over water
- Open rural areas without obstructions
- Flat areas where you can see the other person
To ensure you are getting maximum range for your environment:
- Be sure to use fresh or fully charged batteries - low batteries will cause low power conditions
- Be sure you are on a GMRS only channel - channels 8-14 are restricted by the FCC to low power
- Be sure to set your radio to use Hi power.
Q: What type of batteries does the radio use?
A: The GXT3000 operates on the (included) AVP18 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery pack (BATT18R) or optionally (not included), 3 AA batteries.
Q: What is Group Mode and how does it work?
A: In group mode, you can set up groups of radio users so that you can do a group call alert to only one group or all groups with the same group code.
- Group mode only works on channels 1-22
- To use group mode, you must first
- Turn group mode operation on
- Set up a group code
- Set the radio's group number / group ID
- Set the group caller ID
- Set the group ring tone
Q: Is this radio repeater capable?
A: Yes! The GXT3000 can access a national network of Repeaters that can extend the range of the radio when using repeater channels 15-22. Repeater channels operate with different reception & transmission frequencies.
Q: Can I silence beeps on the GXT3000?
A: Yes! Silent operation suppresses tones generated by the radio including button feedback and low battery beeps. In order to do this:
- Press the MENU button until "bP" is flashing in the display
- Use the UP/DOWN arrow to turn the button beeps ON or Off
- Press MENU to accept the setting and advance to the next setting
Q: Can I add frequencies to my GXT3000 that are not programmed into the radio?
A: In short, no. As radios specifically designed for use and approval only under General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) rules, Midland's GXT series radios have channel frequencies are that are prescribed and limited by the FCC.
GMRS frequencies are shared with frequencies of FRS radios, so GMRS and FRS radios can communicate with each other.
The GXT3000 will be able to change channel / frequency on the fly to any GMRS frequency, but if the other radios you are trying to communicate with use frequencies different from GMRS frequencies (e.g. Marine radios), the GXT3000 cannot be adapted to communicate with them.
