FAQs
Q: What is the reach of this radio?
A: At 5 Watts, this radio can easily reach up to 5 miles, depending on the terrain
Q: Do I need a license to use this radio?
A: Yes. These radios operate on GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies which require an FCC license. You must be licensed prior to operating the radio. You can apply for a license at the FCC's website, or read more about that here.
Q: How do I factory reset the radio?
A: To factory reset the GXT67, press and hold the menu and PTT buttons while powering the radio on. This will restore the radio to its default factory settings.
Q: How do I install my external accessories?
A: Remove the accessory jack cover and set it aside for safekeeping while using accessories. Insert the accessory plug into the speaker / mic jack, making sure it is securely in place and has made a good connection. Reinstall and tighten the accessory cover when finished using accessories.
** Proper tightening of the accessory jack cover is necessary for maintaining the IP67 waterproof and dust-proof performance of the radio**
Q: What type of batteries does the radio use?
A: The GXT67 Pro radio comes with a rechargeable internal battery that can be charged using the desktop charger or the vehicle power adapter. The desktop charger and USB-C cable are compatible with industry-standard PD (power delivery) and quick-charging USB-C AC wall adapters. The battery may be charged while the radio is either on or off, but charging will take more time with the radio on.
Q: Why is the battery not customer-replaceable?
A: As an IP67 rated radio, the G67 is waterproof and dust-proof. The battery compartment being factory sealed keeps it completely waterproof and protects the radio in that way. The other reason, not proprietary to our radio, is the use of the Li-ion battery, which are widely favored for their high energy & power density, long life, and low self-discharge rate. The expectation is that the battery will last for the life expectancy of the radio which, like any consumer electronic device, will eventually need replacing. However, these radios, and the batteries, have an expected serviceable life of several years, and Midland has a warranty policy to provide even more confidence in their life expectancy.
Q: Are there best practices for optimizing the life of my battery?
A: Several!
- When possible, operate the radio in low or medium power. High can be used when needed, but will require more of the battery power
-
Avoid extreme temps! Extreme temperatures can adversely affect the performance and life of Li-ion batteries. High temperatures can accelerate degradation.
- When you think about storing the radio when not in use, avoid places like your garage, your dashboard, a storage unit that is not temperature controlled, etc.
- Similarly, avoid charging in environments with hot temperatures
- In addition to storing in a cool, dry place, when storing your radios, Li-ion batteries will do better when they are stored at around a 40-60% charge. Long-term storage at full charge or complete discharge can degrade the battery
- Similarly, the batteries will do better if they are recharged between short term usage, when the battery has only been slightly discharged. The best practice is to avoid waiting until the battery is at a very low level or completely discharged
Q: What is Group Mode and how does it work?
A: In group mode, you can set up groups of radio users so that you can do a group call alert to only one group or all groups with the same group code.
- Group mode only works on channels 1-22
- To use group mode, you must first
- Turn group mode operation on
- Set up a group code
- Set the radio's group number / group ID
- Set the group caller ID
- Set the group ring tone
- While operating in group mode, the GROUP icon is displayed along with the group ID number and group code for easy reference
Q: Is this radio repeater capable?
A: Yes! The GXT67 Pro can access a national network of repeaters that can extend the range of the radio when using repeater channels 15-22. Repeater channels operate with different reception & transmission frequencies.
Q: Are these radios compatible with my Midland FRS handhelds?
A: Yes. Channels 15-22 will work with your Midland FRS handhelds. Narrowband is the best setting for operating with FRS-only radios.
Q: Can I silence beeps on the GXT67 PRO?
A: Yes! Silent operation suppresses tones generated by the radio including button feedback and low battery beeps. It does not affect SOS tones and also does not affect tones received in transmissions from other radios. The radio can also use a vibrate alert which will vibrate the radio instead of sounding tones to alert you when receiving a direct call or group call from another radio that is compatible with your radio's vibrate function.
Q: What is the optional GXT67 PRO Interface Programming Cable & Software for?
A: The optional interface programming cable is used to configure the radio interface with GXT67 PRO software. With this, you will be able to view & change your radio's configuration on a PC. You can also save and reload configurations, define up to 49 custom channels (51-99) and adding a custom name to a channel. This cable and PC application software are purchased separately from the GXT67 PRO.
Q: Can I change the level of the backlight?
A: Yes! The backlight can be turned off, or used with 5 varying levels of brightness plus 7 backlight colors
Q: What accessories come with my GXT67?
A: A desktop charger, AC wall adapter, USB-C charging cable, snap on DC vehicle adapter, and a belt clip
Q: How do I use the belt clip?
A: (See Diagram and steps below)
- Slide the CLIP POST down into the BELT CLIP LATCH on the back of the radio until the LOCK TAB clicks
- Insert the CLIP POST into the BELT CLIP UPSIDE DOWN until the BELT CLIP's locking tab clicks
- Rotate the BELT CLIP 180° until the radio & clip both face upward and are securely in place
Q. How do I remove the belt clip?
A. Rotate the radio 180°until radio is upside-down. Gently move the radio up toward the top of the BELT CLIP until it slides out. To remove the CLIP POST gently pull the LOCK TAB away from the radio, then gently move the CLIP POST towards the top of the radio.
Q: How many channels does the GXT67 have?
A: The radio features up to 99 GMRS Channels:
- 22 standard GMRS channels
- 28 preset privacy code channels
- Up to 49 user-defined channels
It also has 8 standard GMRS repeater channels and 142 privacy codes & group mode
Q: Does this radio have a removable antenna?
A: No. The design of this radio does not allow it to be removed.
Q: Will using a repeater add to the range of the GXT67?
A: Yes! A repeater can increase the range of a signal. Repeaters are electronic devices that amplify and retransmit signals, allowing them to travel farther. For example, a radio repeater can extend the range of a radio and improve the clarity of two-way radio transmission. Repeaters act as a combination of a radio receiver and radio transmitter. They receive a signal and transmit it so that two-way radios can cover longer distances and navigate obstructions. this makes repeaters the middle man and why they're so important in improving radio range.
