This step-by-step guide walks you through installing the repeater programming software, connecting your repeater, choosing a repeater channel, setting privacy codes, and syncing those settings to your radios.
What You’ll Need
- - A Windows PC with admin permission to install software
- Your repeater and the programming USB cable
- The repeater programming software download (ZIP with MXR10 Setup and programming guide) is available for download .
Tip: If the software downloads as a ZIP file, right-click and choose **Extract All** before running the setup.
Step 1: Install the Programming Software (Windows)
1. Locate the downloaded ZIP file and extract it.
2. Open the extracted folder and double-click "MXR10 Setup".
3. If Windows shows “Windows protected your PC,” click **More info → Run anyway**.
4. Complete the installation (Next → Next → Finish).
5. Confirm the program icon appears on your Desktop or search for it in the Start Menu.
Step 2: Connect Devices in the Correct Order
1. Close the programming software if it’s open.
2. Unplug the programming cable from the repeater.
3. Plug the USB programming cable into your PC first, and let Windows register the device.
4. Then plug the other end into the repeater.
5. Launch the MXR10 programming software.
Step 3: Select the COM Port
1. In the software, click the Settings/COM gear icon.
2. Choose COM3 if available (or whichever COM port your PC assigned).
3. Click OK to confirm.
4. You’re now ready to read, edit, and write settings to your repeater.
Step 4: Choose Your Repeater Channel
Use channels 1–8 in the software (these are wideband). Select any one channel to use (e.g., Channel 3).
Channel Mapping (Repeater → Radio)
Repeater 1 → Radio 15RP
Repeater 2 → Radio 16RP
Repeater 3 → Radio 17RP
Repeater 4 → Radio 18RP
Repeater 5 → Radio 19RP
Repeater 6 → Radio 20RP
Repeater 7 → Radio 21RP
Repeater 8 → Radio 22RP
Example: If you select Repeater Channel 3, your radios will use Channel 17RP.
Step 5: Set Privacy Codes (DEC & ENC)
Each channel row has two tone fields:
- DEC (Decode): Receive tone
- ENC (Encode): Transmit tone
1. Turn ON the channel row you’re programming.
2. Choose two tone numbers (most users set DEC and ENC to the same number).
3. Avoid common or guessable numbers.
4. You’ll later enter these same tones on your radios for TX/RX.
Step 6: Write Settings to the Repeater
1. Click Write (or Write to Repeater).
2. If prompted for a password, leave it blank.
3. Wait until the write completes, then close the software.
4. Safely disconnect the USB cable from the repeater.
Step 7: Set the Repeater’s Physical Channel
1. On the repeater, use the buttons to select the channel you programmed (e.g., Channel 3).
2. Hold the Up button to change channels.
3. Seeing “CT” and an “H” icon on the screen is normal.
Step 8: Program Your Radios to Match
1. On each radio that will use the repeater:
- Select the corresponding RP channel (e.g., 17RP for Repeater Channel 3).
- Set both privacy codes to match the repeater’s tones.
- TX (Transmit)= ENC tone
- RX (Receive) = DEC tone
2. If both are the same on the repeater, enter the same code twice on the radio.
Quick Checks & Troubleshooting
• Installer blocked: Click More info → Run anyway.
• Repeater not detected: Ensure you plugged the USB into the PC first, then into the repeater.
• ZIP won’t open: Right-click → Extract All before setup.
• Password prompt: Leave it blank.
• Radios won’t key the repeater: Confirm you’re on the correct RP channel and TX/RX privacy codes match.
Example: Putting It All Together
1. Program Repeater Channel 3 with DEC = CTCSS 12 and ENC = CTCSS 12, then write it to the device.
2. Set the repeater’s hardware channel to 3.
3. On each radio, select Channel 17RP and set TX = CTCSS 12, RX = CTCSS 12.
4. Test your call through the repeater.
