A: The Midland 75-822 uses a Function button together with Memory buttons to access extra features without adding many physical buttons. The Function button acts like a “shift” key on a keyboard. By itself, it does nothing. When pressed before another button, it changes what that button does.

The Function (F) Button

The Function button allows you to access secondary features on the radio. These features are not available by pressing a button once. You must press the Function button first, then press another button.

Important things to know about the Function button

• It must be pressed first.

• It only stays active for a short time.

• If you wait too long, you must press it again.

• Nothing happens if you press Function by itself.

Think of the Function button as telling the radio, “I want to do something extra.”

When to Use the Function Button

You use the Function button when you want to:

• Save a channel to memory

• Access certain special modes

• Lock or unlock buttons (depending on configuration)

• Use dual or alternate channel features (if enabled on your model)

If you only want to change channels or talk, you do not need the Function button.

Memory Buttons (M1 through M5)

The memory buttons allow you to save commonly used channels so you can return to them instantly without scrolling through all 40 channels.

For example, you might save:

• Channel 19 for highway use

• A work or farm channel

• A group or family channel

• A local information channel

The Midland 75-822 typically supports up to five memory channels.

Q: How do I recall a Memory Channel

A: If a channel is already saved to a memory button:

1. Turn the radio on.
2. Press the memory button (M1, M2, M3, M4, or M5).
3. The radio will immediately switch to the channel saved in that memory.

You do not need to press the Function button to recall a saved memory.

Q: How do I save a Channel to a Memory Button?

A: This is where the Function button is used.

Follow these steps carefully:

1. Turn the radio on.
2. Use the channel up or down buttons to select the channel you want to save.
3. Press the Function (F) button once.
4. Within a few seconds, press and hold the memory button you want to store the channel in (M1 through M5).
5. Hold the memory button until you hear a beep or see a confirmation on the display.
6. Release the button.

The selected channel is now saved to that memory position.

Important notes:

• Saving a new channel will overwrite whatever was previously stored in that memory.

• Each memory button can store only one channel.

• If you do not press the memory button quickly enough after pressing Function, the radio will exit function mode and nothing will be saved.

Example: Saving Channel 19

1. Use the channel buttons to select channel 19.
2. Press the Function button.
3. Press and hold M1 until the radio confirms.
4. Channel 19 is now stored in memory button M1. Later, pressing M1 will instantly return you to channel 19.

Q: How do I clear a memory channel? 

A: The radio does not have a separate “clear” function.

To change a memory channel:

1. Select a new channel using the channel buttons.
2. Press the Function button.
3. Press and hold the same memory button you want to replace. The new channel will overwrite the old one.
