Midland’s WR120 and WR400 offer several options for customizing your radio. You are able to choose the type of alerts you get, the way the alert is received, and on newer models, the volume of the alert tone.
Customizing the types of Alerts
The WR120and WR400 have up to 80 alerts, depending on the model of radio. The full list of alerts can be found here. Any alerts with a * are always on and cannot be turned off.
To edit alerts, navigate through your menu settings to get to SET EVENTS. Once in SET EVENTS, you will have 4 options; ALL DEFAULT, ALL ON, ALL OFF, and EDIT EVENTS.
- ALL DEFAULT- This is how the radio comes programmed from Midland.
- ALL ON- When this is selected, all alerts available on the radio will be turned on. If any alert is sent for your county, you will receive it.
- ALL OFF- When alerts all turned off, the radio will only receive alerts that cannot be turned off, such as Tornado Warning.
- EDIT EVENTS- When you select this option, you will be able to go one by one through all the non-mandatory alerts and turn them on or off.
- Alerts that cannot be turned off and will not appear in the EDIT EVENTS section. Please note that some of these may not be available on older models:

Alert Type Options
The WR radios have 3 different alert type options; VOICE, TONE, and DISPLAY. When an alert is received, the alert name will scroll across the screen, the corresponding light will appear, and the selected alert type will occur. To set the alert type, go to ALERT TYPE in the menu settings.
- VOICE- When an alert is received while the radio is in voice mode, the radio will sound a tone for 8 seconds or until the WEATHER button is pressed, then the radio will speak the alert for up to 3 minutes or until the WEATHER button is pressed.
- TONE- When an alert is received while the radio is in tone mode, the radio will sound a tone for up to 3 minutes or until the WEATHER button is pressed.
- DISPLAY- When the radio receives an alert while set to display, the alert will only scroll across the screen and the corresponding light will flash.
Volume Options
The newest models of the WR series, the DSP models, will have the option for selectable alert volume. The radios will have 3 options, low, medium, and high. You are able to choose the volume under the menu setting ALERT VOLUME.
